The California auto lemon law was adopted in 1982. California was the first state in the country to pass auto lemon law, which later became one of the most powerful and consumer-friendly laws in the country. Due to this law millions of people who purchased defective cars were able to avoid driving a lemon. Unfortunately, only new car buyers were covered under the lemon law in, and customers who purchase used cars in California were undergoing the risk of buying a “lemon” or becoming a victim of dealer fraud. They had to still worry about hidden defects and problems that the car may have.

In July the Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the Car Buyer’s Bill of Rights. Pursuant to this law car buyers will now have an option to return the purchased vehicle to the dealership within a two day period called a “cooling off” period. The “cooling off” period gives car buyers an opportunity to get to know their vehicles and any defects and problems the vehicle may have. In fact the Car Buyer’s Bill of Rights offers a significant change in the way used cars are sold in California.
