The son of a diabetic man who died in a nursing home due to negligence has been awarded compensation for his family following a trial that found the nursing home doctor and a professional health care group at fault. The deceased man had been admitted temporarily to a nursing home for rehabilitation following a leg amputation secondary to diabetic complications. However, during his stay at a number of centres a medication error caused him to be neglected to be given a medication for a transplanted kidney that was a part of combination therapy to prevent rejection. The medical mistake was not detected until he required hospitalization for renal (kidney) failure, which lead to his death 6 months later
