Welding rods, and the welding process, can cause a number of injuries. First, the arc rays from the welding process can injure eyes and burn skin. Next, one can be harmed by electric shock. Next, and what is the focus of current litigation, is welding fumes and gases which can be dangerous to your health in many ways.

Welding rods contain heavy metals. These become airborne when the welding rod is burned. There are a number of substances in welding rods that are dangerous. The recent litigation is focused on one of these dangerous substances - manganese. However welding rods (and the flux that is applied to these rods) contain a number of dangerous materials including, aluminum, chromium (soluble chromium compounds are known to cause cancer in humans), nickel (insoluble nickel is a known to cause cancer in humans), and silicon.

The fumes contain: oxides and complex materials such as iron oxide, complex manganese, molybdenum, silicon, chromium and nickel compounds. The primary routes of entry are the respiratory system, eyes and/or skin. Once ingested, the rods can cause: dizziness, nausea or dryness or irritation of nose, throat or eyes, fume fever characterized by chills, fever, upset stomach, vomiting, irritation of the throat and aching of body, metallic taste, nausea, tightness in chest, metal fume fever, allergic reaction, irritation of the respiratory tract, lung damage and asthma-like symptoms. Swallowing chromium salts can cause severe injury or death. Dust on skin can form ulcers. Eyes may be burned by chromium (VI) compounds. Allergic reactions may occur in some people. Silicon dust and fumes may cause irritation of the respiratory system, skin and eyes; molybdenum causes irritation of the eyes, nose and throat.
