NC Water Rights Committee Releases Podcast Addressing The State Trust Concept
RALEIGH, N.C. - The N.C. Water Rights Committee (www.ncwaterrights.org) has released a podcast featuring Christopher Bramlett, treasurer of N.C. Water Rights Committee, discussing the State Trust Concept as a better option to own and manage the Yadkin Hydroelectric Project than what Alcoa currently proposes. The podcast addresses the implementation and cost of the Trust, as well as the consequences of allowing Alcoa to have a monopoly on North Carolina's natural water resources for the next 50 years.
Alcoa has applied for a 50-year license from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) that would allow the multinational corporation a monopoly on hydroelectric power on the state's portion of the Yadkin River. The N.C. Water Rights Committee calls for establishing a Trust with respect to owning and managing the Project on behalf of the state's residents. In return, it would provide the state with multiple advantages connected to the Project that Alcoa has not promised in its application.
