George Jones University Hosts Talent Search

NASHVILLE, TN. (July 24, 2008) - "Step right up, come on in if you'd like to take the grand tour." That's the classic tune one lucky graduate of George Jones University will be hearing this September.

Legendary performer George Jones has made a generous gift to the program that bears his name. All registrants for the upcoming GJU session will have the opportunity to perform in a competition for the coveted position of opening act at a future George Jones concert.

"The namesake of our program has given us a gift of indescribable magnificence," asserts Tandy Rice, Dean of George Jones University, who along with George and his wife, Nancy, founded the program in 2006. "This worldwide talent search takes everything we do to a whole new level."

The 2-day seminar program, held twice each year, provides a unique and substantive learning environment for music industry hopefuls from around the world. Student "possums" attend classes at the Franklin, TN private ranch of George and Nancy Jones where successful entrepreneurs and industry executives provide the instruction.

GJU program topics include touring, performing, booking, management, finances, working with record labels and publishers, and other areas of interest presented by industry executives. The lineup of professionals slated to present at the September 25-27 program includes Bob Whittaker, former General Manager of the Grand Ole Opry; Helen Cornelius, artist and Grand Ole Opry member; John Zarling, Director of New Media for Big Machine Records and The Valory Music Co.; Martha Moore, Publicist, So Much Moore Media; Philip K. Lyon, Attorney, Phillips & Lyon, PLLC; Stephen Cochran, artist on Aria Records; Blair Durham, Attorney; and Bill Cody, broadcast personality, WSM and GAC. Presenters speak about their area of expertise and then allow time for Q&A with the students.

The grand prize winner of the GJU talent competition will perform as the opening act for an upcoming George Jones concert. Music industry executives and entrepreneurs will judge the competition based on several criteria including artistry, vocal ability, and stage presence. Competitors must be registered for the Fall session of GJU. A second prize winner will have the chance to perform in Nashville while the Country Radio Seminar is in town and third prize is a guitar autographed by George Jones.

Tandy Rice is effusive when discussing the prize Jones has granted, saying, "I cannot say enough about George's generosity and I am so grateful for his confidence in this invaluable program. This prize is the chance of a lifetime for one of our graduates. Imagine opening for the greatest singer in the history of country music! It's an opportunity that's pure country gold."
