Gift Drive For Single Mothers Kicks Off
Single Mother Gift Drive Kicks Off
Gifts For Moms is kicking off its second annual gift drive for single mothers. This year, the group is hoping to collect 500 gifts and cards for mothers parenting children alone in North Texas.
When you help a mother, you help her children, which ultimately helps heal the world, said Hazel Alterman, co-founder of Gifts For Moms. When you lift a mothers spirit, she passes on that energy to her children, who in turn gift the world with their own positive spirit. When a mother is down, the children suffer; a simple act of kindness has a ripple effect that knows no bounds.
The year-old organization will kick off its gift drive during a reception Sunday November 8 at 5016 Charles Place in Plano. Single moms and volunteers are invited to the reception where emerging Dallas Chef L will donate and serve a five-star four-course meal.
Group organizers are asking North Texas residents for gifts valued upwards of $25 for the moms. We want to give them gifts that will make them feel special and appreciated, said Ms. Ward. We are looking for nice pajamas, robes, slippers, perfume, jewelry and gift certificates. A number of area retailers have signed on with drop boxes and gift registries in their stores. For those who want to donate but are not sure what to purchase, they can either call one of the Gifts For Moms merchants or stop by their stores for a gift or gift certificate.
Annie Rolfe, single mother of a 14-year-old, received a gift last year and is elated that she will receive a gift again this year. This program shows us that someone cares. As a mom you often feel left out because you are always doing and taking care of everyone else. On Christmas it seems like no-one remembers you.
Last year the organization distributed 250 gifts during a huge Christmas party for single mothers and on the streets of South Dallas. The group finds moms through a number of social service agencies, friends, and day care centers. This year we hope to double the number of gifts we distributed last year. We have set up drop boxes at local merchants and we have groups that have adopted us as their charity this year. We are looking for more organizations that will be willing to collect Christmas gifts for single mothers.
This year, I am seeing a need more critical than last year, said Stephanie Ward, Gifts For Moms Founder. The recession has really taken a toll on moms this year. Not a week goes by that I dont get a call from a mother who is newly homeless or without a job. Getting a little Christmas cheer will mean a lot more for many struggling women and their children this year.
Single mothers have been hardest hit by the recession. As a group, they are already the lowest paid segment in America. That, coupled with a declining job market and a weakened economy, has created a calamitous situation for many families in North Texas, Ms. Ward said.
