BlogCatalog Launches Portable Social Network Activity Aggregator Widget

BlogCatalog.com a social network for bloggers, has a launched a widget that makes it easy for bloggers to display their social activity, from the most popular social networks, right on their own blogs.

Networks include: Amazon Wishlists, BlogCatalog, Delicious, Digg, Facebook, Flickr, Last.fm, Multiply, MySpace, Sphinn, StumbleUpon, Twitter and YouTube.

"Any network we add to our Social Dashboard can be added to the social network aggregator widget," says Antony Berkman, president of BlogCatalog.com. "It's the next step toward developing a universal public reader that allows bloggers to share their social network activities with friends anywhere they want -- including on their own blog, Web site, Facebook page, RSS feed and more -- putting people in more control of their data."

The widget was developed while BlogCatalog was testing its dashboard aggregation feature. The dashboard allows BlogCatalog member bloggers to track the activities of friends across social networks. The social widget is a convenient way for bloggers to broadcast their individual activities across multiple networks anywhere they choose to display the widget.

"Everybody keeps talking about lifestreams, but what some bloggers tell us is that all they want is an easy way to connect and stay connected," Berkman said. "They want data portability, but most networks are designed to attract people to network A to see what is on network B. That's not really portable.The social network aggregator widget is both portable and network neutral."

The widget is designed to make it easy to keep up with what a blogger you follow is doing on all the social networks they belong to."The widget can be subscribed to just like any RSS feed. You can track your friends' activities if you subscribe to their RSS widget feed," Berkman said.

"It will help friends and blog readers find out if you Digg an article so they can Digg it too. Online social networks have always been about helping people connect by sharing common interests. This makes it easier to navigate the Web and increases the likelihood that something will go viral."

According to Berkman the new widget is the first step toward complete portability. He said it allows members to share the information they want wherever they want to share it.

Since last year, BlogCatalog has evolved from a blog directory to a vibrant member-driven online community with tools, features, widgets, and forums that help bloggers connect. More than 100,000 approved bloggers interact on BlogCatalog every day.
