Myanmar Burma Cyclone Nargis Appeal Donor Information Pack Available...

As further information emerges about the extent of the humanitarian disaster in Myanmar (Burma), inflicted by Tropical Cyclone Nargis, the United Nations, international aid agencies and governments stepped up their calls to the Myanmar government to allow immediate access to the region.

UNICEF (http://www.unicef.org/) has expressed concern that the lack of shelter and safe drinking water, coupled with poor sanitary conditions, may significantly increase the death toll among children and other vulnerable populations, leading to a second wave of deaths. It has been estimated that approximately 8 million children are in immediate danger.

The first UN plane carrying relief supplies for the hundreds of thousands of victims of Cyclone Nargis landed in Burma today. Merlin (http://www.merlin.org.uk/Home.aspx), a UK specialist health charity is coordinating an emergency response to help the thousands of people affected by Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar. A team, made up of a doctor, two logisticians and a project coordinator, is arriving in Laputta - one of the towns worst-affected by the disaster. The international aid effort is expected to increase over the coming days.

International Aid agencies from across the globe are either in the region or seeking access.

A free Myanmar Donor Information Pack providing details of over 50 international aid agencies that have launched appeals is available from Assured Giving (http://www.assured-giving.com). The Information Pack is updated on a daily basis.
