DRS Technologies, Inc. (www.drs.com) announced that it received a $23 million order on a five-year, $104 million contract from the Northrop Grumman Corporation to provide replacement Environment Control Systems (ECS) for electronic equipment at the Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) launch and missile alert facilities. DRS will also provide equipment support and maintenance training services.
The ECS Replacement Program, a modernization initiative for the U.S. Air Force, calls for the replacement of existing brine chillers, pneumatic control systems, fans, dampers, controllers
and alarms at launch facility and missile alert facilities to extend equipment life. The ECS Replacement Program team includes the U.S. Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center'ss 526th ICBM
Systems Group at Hill Air Force Base in Utah and a team from Northrop Grumman.
The work will be performed by the DRS Environmental Systems business unit, based in Florence, Kentucky. The work began in January 2009, with completion expected in September 2010.
The land-based Minuteman III ICBM fulfills an essential role in U. S. strategic deterrence initiatives, said Roger N. Sexauer, president of DRS's Power and Environmental Systems business
group. As a preeminent environmental control system supplier for multiple applications across the military spectrum, it is an honor that DRS was once again chosen to assist in providing
this type of equipment for mission sustainment.
The Environmental Control Systems will provide filtered, and temperature controlled air to Minuteman III Launch Facilities, Missile Alert Facilities, test sites at the Hill Air Force Base
Strategic Missile Integration Complex, and sites at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. They are also providing components for ICBM Type I trainer facilities.
