Successful Hubble Service Mission Aided By Timken PrecisionBearings

The Timken Company (NYSE: TKR) today announced NASA astronauts used power hand tools equipped with Timken's174; thin-section precision ball bearings to successfully perform recent repairs on the Hubble Space Telescope. The repair portion of the mission was concluded May 18th, with the space shuttle Atlantis and its crew, which was due to return to Earth on Friday, May 22, but delayed due to weather.

Wearing bulky spacesuit gloves, the astronauts used the hand tools to unfasten dozens of tiny screws and replace circuit boards on the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). Both instruments are critical to the ongoing operation of the Hubble telescope.

The hand tools were manufactured by ATK, a premier aerospace and defense company with more than 19,000 employees in 22 states, Puerto Rico and internationally, with revenues in excess of $4.5 billion. News and information about ATK can be found at http://www.atk.com.
