Poynter Commemorates Obama Election With Keepsake Book

The Poynter Institute, a school for professional journalists and media leaders, has announced it will publish a collection of newspaper front pages commemorating the election of Barack Obama, with an introduction by Doonesbury creator Garry Trudeau. President Obama: Election 2008 will showcase 75 front pages selected for their geographic diversity and demographic importance to the election as well as for an interesting marriage of words and images. The book, priced at $14.99, will be published in partnership with Andrews McMeel Publishing and will be available before Christmas. A hardcover edition will be available for $24.99. Profits from sales will help subsidize Poynter training.

This important book represents an opportunity for people to purchase a keepsake while supporting the industry that produced these memorable pages, said Dr. Karen Dunlap, Poynter president. Proceeds from the book will be used to fund training for journalists who continue to live their life'ss passion in print, online or on air.

Poynter will collaborate with dozens of U.S. and international newspapers on the book, including: Anchorage Daily News, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, Detroit Free Press, Rocky Mountain News, St. Petersburg Times, Staten Island Advance, The Boston Globe, The (Raleigh) News 's38; Observer, The Philadelphia Tribune, The Times-Picayune, USA Today, and college papers, ethnic press, and international publications.

It was clear months ago that this would be a historic election, said Julie Moos, editor of Poynter Publications and Poynter Online. We anticipated this Election Day might be an opportune chance for people to reconnect with newspaper front pages--and it was.

President Obama: Election 2008 is the third book Poynter and Andrews McMeel have published together. Pope John Paul II: May 18, 1920-April 2, 2005 was published in May 2005. September 11, 2001, was published in November 2001, and has sold hundreds of thousands of copies.
