Little Big Farm Invites Flower Lovers to Make Something Beautifulthis...

On June 23, Little Big Farm owner Patti Doell is kicking off a summer bouquet workshop series right from her field of blooms in Blairstown, N.J. A horticulture expert, Doell will be taking her students through the cut flower fields and instructing classes on the care and cultivation of dozens of varieties of flowers. Students will then be able to cut, prepare and assemble their own custom bouquets to take back to their home or place of work. Classes run from 6 - 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday evenings and cost $35.00 a session. Class sizes are limited so students should register by calling Little Big Farm (www.littlebigfarm.com) at 908-459-5484. The farm is located at 111 Heller Hill Road, in Blairstown, N.J.

The experience of creating a beautiful bouquet from locally grown flowers is something unique and wonderful, said Doell. These flowers are so fresh that they have an incredible fragrance and a long vase life. We are also able to grow specialty flowers such as 'slove in a mist's and 'ssweet peas's that can'st be shipped in from overseas because of their delicate natures.

Some of the other flower varieties that the students will be working this summer include, celosia, cosmos, larkspur, phlox and cosmos, zinnia, and echinops. A complete flower list can be found at www.littlebigfarm.com. All the flowers grown on farm are cultivated without the use of synthetic herbicides or pesticides.

We take an organic approach to flower growing out of our concern for protecting the air, soil and water sources that sustain the environment, said Doell. By being watchful and using practices such as Integrated Pest Management and good farm planning, we can grow healthy flowers that stay ahead of any troubles. It'ss important for us to grow a sustainable product that is safe for our customers, our field workers, and our local ecosystem.

Originally established as a dairy farm in the mid-1800s, the picturesque family farm is currently in its third year of flower production. Farm owner Patti Doell has been working in horticulture since the mid 1990s when she formed a partnership in a floral landscape design company. Doell furthered her horticultural expertise while working at the New York Botanical Garden where she managed gardens that provided programs for children and residents on how to propagate flowers and vegetables. Little Big Farm is a member of the Northeast Organic Farming Association, the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers, Foodshed Alliance and Local Harvest.

Little Big Farm'ss flowers can also be purchased right from the farm stand at 111 Heller Hill Road, Blairstown, N.J, or at the Blairstown Farmers's Market on Saturdays beginning July 11 from 10:00 - 2:00 p.m. at the Givens Belet American Legion / VFW Post, 23 Hope Road (Rt. 521).
