AC Baker Apparel Brings High Fashion to Humboldt County

Local fashion designer, Andrea Baker is bringing style and elegance home in a way that is truly inspired by offering couture style design services in addition to her ready to wear collections. From custom bridal and formal wear to custom wardrobe and wardrobe consultations, Andrea is really tackling every aspect of fashion.

   


After starting A.C. Baker Apparel in late 2003 the company is now starting to build momentum after a rather rocky start. Not having been schooled in design, Andrea had to learn the industry as she was trying to navigate it. While the learning curve was brutal, her hard work and determination has paid off.



"I started A.C. Baker Apparel to fill a niche I felt was badly needed: feminine fashion forward clothing that fits. I also found that, on a smaller scale, there were niches I could fill locally with custom design work. There is little to be found here in the way of bridal and formal wear that is unique, as well as being able to offer custom pieces to individuals that truly suit their tastes. Special atelier style work primarily only exists in larger metro areas, but Humboldt County is more fashion savvy than ever and I felt a responsibility to design for the women in my own community. Without their support, nothing else really matters. We hear so often that something can't exist here because we are too far removed from the rest of the world. I am here to prove that theory wrong. Great fashion can exist anywhere and we have an entire population of Humboldt County women who prove it day in and day out.

   


Doing custom design work is incredibly inspired, and much different than creating a ready to wear collection. With a custom piece you are always thinking of the individual who will be wearing it...what works for them, their mode of personal expression and how it can be enhanced through design. These are also the kind of relationships that help inspire successful lines of clothing that stay fresh and relevant. When you are designing for yourself (or a dress form) it is really easy to lose sight of your customer and how they live...you get really caught up in the marketing or the size scale and somehow the fashion really suffers for it. By staying in touch with the women I want to sell to, I get first hand information about how they feel and what their concerns are. I like the balance between couture and ready to wear. On one hand you can design an original piece and really sink your teeth into the design process, and on the other, you can use that inspiration to develop a line or a theme that is grounded in reality (and not a fashion magazine)."



A partial summer collection will soon be available at Ciara's Irish Shop, and at several locations out of the area. Andrea also offers wardrobe consultations and styling for events or portraits. A.C.
