Starlight Bedding by Wendy Bellissimo Versus Star Bright by Brandee...

May 6, 2005 -- Baby Supermall performed a detailed head-to-head comparison of Wendy Bellissimo's Starlight crib bedding to Brandee Danielle's Star Bright. The review was initiated by customer comments on Babies R Us' own website concerning the quality of its $299 Starlight bedding. Brandee Danielle's Star Bright bedding is similar in design to Starlight and sells for $100 less. Baby Supermall concludes that the $199 Brandee Danielle crib bedding set is superior to the $299 Wendy Bellissimo / Babies R Us product in terms of materials and workmanship. The differences cause Baby Supermall to question the relative value of the entire Wendy Bellissimo line of crib bedding being sold by Babies R Us.



Focused primarily on the quality of the fabrics and workmanship of the two bedding sets, Baby Supermall's detailed review (see www.babysupermall.com/bedding-compare/star-bright_starlight.html) says that Brandee Danielle's Star Bright bedding, selling for $199, uses higher quality fabrics and more refined sewing and finishing than the Babies R Us bedding that sells for $299 and is advertised on their website as "the very best in quality." Said Robert Meier, President of Baby Supermall: "Brandee Danielle's Star Bright, for $100 less, is a far superior product in terms of materials and workmanship - and I believe it has a more appealing design. Attaching the Wendy Bellissimo name, previously associated with high-end crib bedding, to the Starlight crib bedding does not change its nature. I would not sell the Starlight bedding as a premium product; consumers may like the overall look and design of Starlight, but they should realize that this is not a $400-$500 value being sold for substantially less."

Following shortly on the heals of the acquisition of Toys R Us and Babies R Us by a financial group, these quality and value questions may suggest that the new owners have a challenge on their hands. Indications are that the most successful part of their business has been the baby products group. If consumers begin to question the quality and value of their baby products, this past success could be more difficult to repeat.
