Architectural Resource, LLC was honored this year at the 2009 Detroit Home Design Awards receiving design awards in four different categories including recognition in both of the remodeling categories. The awards included two first place awards: one for a whole house remodel and addition in the Remodel Less Than 1,000 sq ft. category, and one for a unique stairway design, which was itself part of a remodeling project, in the Contemporary Stair and Railing category. The company was also presented with a second place award in the Traditional Interior Design category and a third place award in the Large Remodel More Than 1,000 sq ft. category. All projects were located in Michigan.
The Detroit Home Design Awards (DHDA) program is Michigan'ss preeminent residential design competition showcasing the region'ss top design talent. The awards program, now in its fifth
year, was authored by Detroit Home, a publication devoted to discerning residential architecture and decor. After having been recognized at all previous DHDA programs, Architectural
Resource is very pleased to again be receiving design awards at this prestigious forum.
The first place awarded whole house remodel and addition was for a residence in Ann Arbor. The project involved a complete redesign of the existing kitchen with the addition of a new
daily dining space, mudroom, and adjacent family room. Designed in concert with the Not-So-Big House's174; design principles introduced by Sarah Susanka in 1998, the remodel demonstrates
space-efficient yet gracious living through intelligent design. This is an excellent exhibit of how well-designed smaller spaces are gaining in popularity as green and sustainable design
and building approaches are garnering more and more attention.
The project also included a unique design for the family'ss home center daily message/mail center that was patterned on an arched theme. Detailing in the kitchen and in a unique,
pass-through window to the formal dining room also expressed the theme. The builder partner on this project was Stricklen Building Company with kitchen design assistance by Expo Kitchen
and Bath.
The first place award in the Contemporary Stair and Railing category was a component of a much larger home remodeling project. This home, which was the first in Michigan to earn a
Platinum level certification in the USGBC'ss LEED for Homes program, was also recognized with a third place award in the Large Remodel category. The award-winning stairway involved the
creative reuse of recycled floor joists. These floor joists were diverted from the landfill, replete with their drilled-out holes where former electrical wiring and plumbing lines had
been routed through them. The design incorporated forged metal straps that hung from the floor opening above supporting the recycled floor joists assembled into a folded plate tread and
riser. Our builder colleague on the project was Meadowlark Builders.
With the abundance of outstanding architectural design talent here in southeast Michigan, it is an honor to be continued to be recognized on such a prestigious stage, said Michael
Klement, founder of Architectural Resource, LLC.
