Hugh Lofting Timber Framing Takes First Place at the Faithful Friends...

Hugh Lofting Timber Framing's8217;s Barkirondack Cabin doghouse was awarded First Place at Wilmington's8217;s Faithful Friends/AIA Delaware Barkitecture 2006. The design for the doghouse was inspired by lakefront Adirondack lean-to'ss.The Hugh Lofting Timber Framing team envisioned a dog lazily leafing through the latest dog magazine while lounging in his or her own Barkirondack Cabin.



Constructed of reclaimed Douglas Fir, the cabin reflected a dog'ss love of nature and sustainable living. The cabin featured:

- Purple Heart wood flooring that was salvaged during the construction of Delaware'ss own Kalmar Nyckel

- A rainwater capture system providing fresh drinking water right to the drinking bowl

- A wide entranceway providing plenty of daylight and fresh air while sheltering the inhabitants.

- Salvaged wood shake roofing.



The design for the Barkirondack Cabin was a collaborative effort. The design concept was developed over a BBQ supper, the CAD drawings were developed by Bernadette and Dale, the actual structure was improved upon and embellished by Scott, Steve, Hugh2, Mike and Jeff and the entire team developed ideas for the interior decorations

's8220;Many of our clients are well versed in green building techniques and we are seeing a significant increase in demand for recycled and FSC certified timbers.'s8221; says Lofting. 's8220;The great thing is that the suppliers have been working toward this demand for some time now and the timbers are available. Although recycled timbers are significantly more expensive, FSC certified timbers are only slightly more expensive and are basically comparable in price to non-certified woods.'s8221;



Faithful Friends is a leader in bringing the no-kill ethic to Delaware; actively promoting programs including rescue, foster and adoption, affordable spray/neuter programs and outreach programs to help prevent pet-owner give-ups. All proceeds from the Barkitecture 2006 auction will benefit homeless dogs and cats in Delaware.
