John Sorrenti of JRS Architect P.C. Appointed to National Architectural...



John R. Sorrenti, FAIA, founder and principal of JRS Architect P.C., has been appointed to the Committee on Professional Development of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB).



The committee, which meets four times annually and is composed of six members, develops continuing education materials for architects, who are required to earn 12 credits annually to maintain their licenses. NCARB assists the states in establishing uniform licensing requirements. Sorrenti's8217;s term is for one year.



's8220;It is important for the state board to have input into what NCARB is doing for licensing,'s8221; said Sorrenti, who resides in Glen Cove, NY. 's8220;Through committees such as this, the concerns of the State Board are heard.'s8221;



Sorrenti has been a member of the New York State Board of Architecture since December, 2005. The agency, part of the State Education Department, oversees licensing and professional conduct of architects.



Sorrenti, who holds degrees in architecture from New York Institute of Technology and Ohio University, is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and is the New York State representative to national A.I.A. In addition, he is a past president of the A.I.A. Long Island Chapter, past president of the New York State A.I.A. and a past vice president of the national AIA. He is also a member of the Town of North Hempstead Landmarks Preservations Commission.



Serving as a lobbyist for legislative issues, Sorrenti has achieved a reputation for quality of leadership. In 1991, on behalf of the AIA, Sorrenti helped to form the guidelines for the Americans with Disabilities Act and in 1993, assisted with the New York City ADA code. Sorrenti also served on the National Architectural Accrediting Board committee for college accreditation programs, has performed reviews of his peers for the American Council of Engineering Companies.

About the National Council of Boards of Architecture

NCARB comprises the architectural registration boards of all 50 states as well as those of the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands. NCARB assists its member state registration boards in carrying out their duties and provides a certification program for individual architects.



The mission of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards is to work together as a council of member boards to safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of the public and to assist member boards in carrying out their duties. In order to achieve these goals, the Council develops and recommends standards to be required of an applicant for architectural registration; develops and recommends standards regulating the practice of architecture; provides to member boards a process for certifying the qualifications of an architect for registration; and represents the interests of member boards before public and private agencies. With the Committee of Canadian Architectural Councils (CCAC), NCARB has also established guidelines for the reciprocal registration of U.S. and Canadian architects.
