San Francisco, CA June 25, 2008 -- San Francisco design store and gallery Rare Device is proud to present Home: New Work by Julia Rothman and Caitlin Keegan. Their work will occupy the Rare Device gallery July 10 - August 1, 2008. A reception for the artists will be held Thursday, July 10 from 7-10 pm.
Caitlin Keegan's work for Home is a mix of the household ordinary and fantastic. Much of the work was inspired by a rocking chair owned by Caitlin's great-aunt. When Caitlin was young, she was convinced that the carved lion heads on the arms would come to life. This work was created in the same spirit--imagining often subtle, independent personalities and relationships for objects within the home.
Julia Rothman has moved five times in five years. Through all this moving she realized that home seems to be her "stuff." It's not until the things she's collected or purchased over the years are cluttered around her that she feels comfortable or "at home". Part of her work for Home is a series of drawings of single, ordinary that emphasize imagined history and importance. Other drawings are groupings of a variety of like objects- keys, lamps, and shoes, for example. Julia says, "I like to imagine how many variations of those things a person could own in a lifetime."
Caitlin is from a small town known to many as the Home of the Wiffle Ball. When not designing for Nickelodeon Magazine, she paints, draws, illustrates for various other publications, and occasionally makes books. Her freelance illustration clients have included Nylon, the New York Times, and Playgirl. More recently her work has appeared in Faesthetic #7 and in the book "Pattern Design: Applications and Variations." She currently resides in Brooklyn, where she has lived since graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design. More of her work can be seen on her website http://caitlinkeegan.com.
Julia is also a pattern designer and illustrator located in Brooklyn New York. Her patterns can be seen on a variety of products like bedding, wallpaper and stationery for companies like Urban Outfitters, The Land of Nod and Hello! Lucky. She recently made illustrations for The New York Times, American Way magazine, and for a line of wooden puzzles for Kid O. Julia is also one third of the design company Also whose specialty is handdrawn animated websites. Julia has a blog called Book by its Cover which features a new beautifully illustrated book daily. For fun she likes going on long walks with her boyfriend and pup Rudy. For more information check out her site http://www.juliarothman.com.
