Crawdaddy The Magazine of Rock Announces the Top 10 Current Books for Music Fans A Guide to Summer Reading

Crawdaddy!, The Magazine of Rock has released its first annual list of best books about music from the first half of 2008, with subjects ranging from Michael Hutchence, Jim Morrison, Willie Nelson, Gilman Street, Joy Division, to Black Sabbath, Sonic Youth and more.

Explaining the list criteria, Managing Editor Jocelyn Hoppa writes: "How did Hunter S. Thompson describe the music industry Oh yeah, 'The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench... a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.'

We thought it'd be a good idea to do a summer reading list based around recently published books on various aspects of this crazy music business because, even if all of these books aren't necessarily very good, they're always entertaining, which is a hallmark for summer reading. As fans of music, we have an inexplicable need to know every detail of our heroes (fallen or otherwise), right down to one psychic's take on what Jim Morrison does in the afterlife."

The 2008 List, in no particular order includes:

924 Gilman: The Story So Far by Brian Edge (MAXIMUMROCKNROLL)

A Tale of Two Brothers: Jim Morrison & Michael Hutchence by Jacqueline Murray (AuthorHouse)

In Search of the Blues by Marybeth Hamilton (Basic Books)

Willie Nelson: An Epic Life by Joe Nick Patoski (Little, Brown & Company)

Black Postcards: A Rock & Roll Romance by Dean Wareham (Penguin Press)

33 1/3: Black Sabbath's Master of Reality by John Darnielle (Continuum)

Rock On: An Office Power Ballad by Dan Kennedy (Algonquin)

My Days With the Doors and Other Stories by Doug Lubahn (self-published)

Joy Division: Piece by Piece by Paul Morely (Plexus)

When We Get to Surf City by Bob Greene (St. Martin's Press)

The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the 20th Century by Alex Ross (Farrar, Straus and Giroux)

Goodbye 20th Century: A Biography of Sonic Youth by David Browne (Da Capo)

About Crawdaddy! The original US magazine of rock, Crawdaddy was first published by Paul Williams in 1965. Through many changes in music and management, Crawdaddy! was reborn in 2007 in its current online form under the direction of Jocelyn Hoppa, with the support of Wolfgang's Vault. Crawdaddy! in 2008 remains true to the tenets of the original credo published in its very first edition: "The aim of this magazine is readability. We are trying to appeal to people interested in rock 'n' roll, both professionally and casually. If we could predict the exact amount of sales of each record we heard, it would not interest us to do so. If we could somehow pat every single pop artist on the back in a manner calculated to please him and his fans, we would not bother. What we want to do is write reviews and articles that you will not want to put down, and produce a magazine that you will read thoroughly every week. And we think we can do it."
