New Art Gallery Designed by Celebrated AfricanAmerican Architect Opening in Ontario California
Whether it be the LAX Airport, the Los Angeles County Courthouse, the Beverly Hills Hotel, the Shrine Auditorium or the other 3000+ buildings that he designed, the work of Master Architect, Paul R. Williams, left a major footprint on Southern California architecture.
And now, the same stylistic influence of Paul R. Williams that presides over Los Angeles, will be seen in Ontario, California with the opening of a new art gallery, located in a building that was designed by Williams.
The Grand Opening Reception of the Paul R. Williams, Gallery by Dzine is scheduled for October 8, 2005 from 5-9 p.m.
's8220;The fact that he was an African American and a celebrated architect, in a time when many thought that combination would be inconceivable deserves recognition. Our goal with the Paul R. Williams, Gallery by Dzine, is to uphold the legacy of Mr. Williams, by offering Ontario and the surrounding community a taste of decadence, fantasy, and modernism. We want to expose visitors to local and national contemporary artists, while educating the general public on the importance of Mr. Williams as a design icon and trailblazer for his time,'s8221; explains Derrick Dzine, Gallery Director.
The Paul R. Williams building, built in 1927, is currently owned by Jeved Management, the property management company responsible for the Pomona Arts Colony and now, the Emporia Arts District. 's8220;We are delighted to mark the completion of this project by giving the community the first opportunity to view
the gallery , 's8220;says Ed Tessier of Jeved Management. 's8220;We take great pride in the work that has been accomplished in Emporia thus far, and we look forward to
the gallery providing a venue in which local artists can show and sell their work.'s8221;
The gallery'ss permanent collection will include pictures of Williams's8217;s architectural masterpieces, as well as a commissioned piece celebrating Williams's8217; life, done by Dzine. In addition to these works,
the gallery will hold monthly exhibitions.
's8220;The Paul R. Williams, Gallery by Dzine will be a regional art center and cultural attraction dedicated to the innovative spirit of Mr. Williams. The gallery will celebrate excellence in the visual arts, and will also be used to educate school aged children on the importance of art in our community. It will be culturally enriching for everyone who visits's8221;, says Prachel Carter of Soulstice, the company hired to assist with marketing and public relations of
the gallery .
The Grand Opening reception will include decadent refreshments, the art of Derrick Dzine and Jeff Orrell, and a special performance art piece by 's8220;Palletry's8221;, during the evening. There is no cost for the reception and a portion of the proceeds from art sales generated that evening will be donated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
After September 26,
