From Saturday 5th June 2006 until Saturday 1st July, 25-year-old Lia Ditton, a professional female sailor and graduating student of Chelsea College of Art & Design, will be staging a
live 24/7 interactive art installation called 's8220;Absolute Solitude, 1 woman, 1 boat's8221; where she will live for 28 days non-stop in a 40ft by 28ft wide racing Trimaran suspended in
inner-city London. The work will be a static re-enactment of the single-handed trans-Atlantic journey Ditton undertook in 2005.
's8216;Absolute Solitude's8217; is about the relationship which develops between the skipper and her boat and will replicate on land the drama of Ditton's8217;s trans-Atlantic odyssey.
Visitors will be invited to climb to a viewing platform and view the boat's8217;s 10ft by 6ft cabin and encouraged to interact with Ditton, who will follow the same 24-hour sleep pattern
as if racing.
A celebrated yachtswoman and artist, Ditton entered the 2005 Faraday Mill OSTAR, her first solo Trans-Atlantic Yacht race, in order to live the subject of her art and combine her two
passions art and sailing. Out of 43 entrants where only 18 finished, she completed 5th in class overall and was not only the youngest competitor but the only woman to finish, in the
smallest trimaran of the fleet.
Leaving Plymouth, England, for Newport, Rhode Island, America, Lia relayed experiences of her trans-Atlantic journey to her shore crew via a satellite phone. This time using the internet,
the exhibition itself is trans-Atlantic, as visitors to Galerie Emourlot in New York will be able converse with Lia during the course of the installation using a unique new voice over IP
(VoIP) Siemens Dual Dect C450 phone, which will be fitted onboard the boat, having been launched in the UK on 5th June by the installation's8217;s sponsor ProVu.
Using voice over the internet incurs no call charges and with ProVu's8217;s new phone, aimed primarily at the home and small business market, a PC is not required. It can be linked to a
standard telephone line and a broadband modem meaning that simultaneous standard and VoIP calls can be made.
Commenting on the interactive art installation Lia Ditton said, 's8220;Inspired by the great William Turner, who tied himself to the rail of a ship in the throe of a storm to experience
the subject of his painting, I wanted to communicate my experience by entering the Faraday Mill OSTAR last year to research the subject of my art. I's8217;m hoping 's8216;Absolute
Solitude's8217; will allow visitors to experience the excitement of crossing the Atlantic.'s8221;
Similar to Ellen McArthur's8217;s B&Q Trimaran, Ditton's8217;s boat will be craned from the Thames and transported to the Tate Britain on Sunday 4th June, where the boat will be
mounted in the Courtyard of Chelsea College. On an angled frame, as if the boat is surging down a huge wave, Ditton will live onboard for the same length of time as it took her to race
across the Atlantic alone, up to 28 days. As the weather changes, the sails will be hoisted or doused and appropriately trimmed to the conditions. The purpose this time is not to race
faster, but to reduce the wind resistance of the anchored yacht.
