FenCon and the Dallas Future Society have selected the Salvation Army as the sole beneficiary of this year's FenCon Charity Auction.
FenCon, an annual literary science fiction/fantasy and filk convention, will happen September 23-25, 2005, at the Holiday Inn Select North Dallas in Dallas, Texas. All money raised by the
charity auction will go directly to the Salvation Army to assist with Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief.
Michael Nelson, chairman for FenCon 2005, said: "In light of the devastation and the tremendous losses suffered by our friends and neighbors in New Orleans and the entire Gulf region, we
feel there is no other option for FenCon's annual charity effort than immediate disaster relief."
The FenCon Charity Auction will feature a variety of items donated by celebrity guests, local merchants, and convention members. Items donated so far include original artwork, autographed
books, and other collectibles.
Additionally, donation jars for the Salvation Army will be available in several locations at the convention for the entire weekend.
Nearly 70 guests and program participants, including writers, filk singers, and artists, are scheduled to appear at FenCon. They will share their expertise and experience in several
venues for and with convention members. Filk concerts will run all day Saturday. ("Filk" is folk music with a science fiction or fantasy twist.) The dealers' room features more than
twenty vendors with merchandise ranging from books to shirts to jewelry.
The Dallas Future Society is a not-for-profit organization informally organized in 2002 and formally created in Feburary, 2003. The DFS seeks to promote the advancement of science,
literature, and music. FenCon is our main outlet for these goals and the one time each year we bring top people in the fields of science fiction, fantasy, filk music, science, and more
together. Membership is open to all and dues are paid annually.
Memberships are available on the FenCon website or at the convention. Both full weekend and day-rate memberships are available.
