Harrahs Reno Celebrates 40 Years of Entertainment

>

Reno, NV June 15, 2006 -- Harrah's8217;s Reno will celebrate 40 years of entertainment on June 20, 2006. Formerly known as the Headliner Room, Sammy's8217;s Showroom opened June 20, 1966 and has since hosted some of the biggest names in showbiz.

Eddie Fisher and John Bubbles opened for the ripening venue, followed by years of legendary entertainers including Bill Cosby, Tony Bennett and Diana Ross. Dale Gordon, a former employee of the Headliner Room, recalls opening night as Eddie Fisher took the stage.

's8220;The orchestra played, 's8220;Oh, My Papa's8221; as he entered stage right. When Eddie Fisher sang there was this tremendous power that permeated the Headliner Room,'s8221; recalled Gordon. 's8220;His voice was almost overpowering. The big finale of the show was, of course, 's8220;Oh, My Papa's8221; which he sang directly to the audience while strolling in their midst. When Eddie left the stage, the audience was screaming for more. It couldn's8217;t have been a better show.'s8221;

Fisher's8217;s performance was also significant in another way. With the transformation of the old Golden Hotel's8217;s 's8220;Carnival Room's8221; into Harrah's8217;s elegant 's8220;Headliner Room,'s8221; there wasn's8217;t much room on the stage for Fisher's8217;s 25-piece orchestra, due to a plaster cyclorama on its back wall.

's8220;Fisher complained that he couldn's8217;t 's8220;feel's8221; the musicians behind him while he was singing and he wanted them down on the main stage with him,'s8221; said Gordon. 's8220;Four days later, the cyclorama was torn down and the wooden risers were constructed for the orchestra and placed on the main stage behind the performer, and they's8217;ve been there ever since.

Sammy Davis, Jr. made his first appearance in the Headliner Room on October 26, 1967. Over the next 22 years, nearly 40 performances followed on that same stage until his last on February 15, 1989. The room was then dedicated to Sammy Davis, Jr. in 1991 and continues to honor his name with entertainment nightly.

Harrah's8217;s Reno will hold an anniversary concert in early fall, 2006 to commemorate the legendary theater. Harrah's8217;s will bring back some of the showroom's8217;s regular performers for a celebratory performance.

The 400-seat Sammy's8217;s Showroom is one of the few celebrity theaters in Reno. It most recently hosted shows for well-known producers Greg Thompson, Larry Wilson and Louis J. Pearlman. For showroom and ticket information, call the Sammy's8217;s Showroom Box Office at (775) 788-3051 or visit the Harrah's8217;s website at www.harrahsreno.com.
