Unseen since a September 2003 retrospective show at Sotheby's prior to Wolf's death in 2005, the featured works are the fruits of a thirty year creative passion that carried through to
the end of his life; a fascinating collection of work that reflects the elegance and impeccable composition of his renowned fashion photography, combined with an intense mood, intriguing
narratives and the classicism of original oil paintings.
His work, though sublimely distinctive in its own right, is reminiscent of masters Balthus, Modigliani, and Magritte. The female figures, often nude or half-dressed, retain the signature
elegance and stylization of Wolf's celebrated fashion photography, yet Wolf creates threads of mysterious narratives and space within the canvas, as we view the intriguing female figures
amidst a network of interior spaces, doorways and mirrored reflections with the expressive additions of carefully placed objects, background landscapes, and architectural elements.
Henry Wolf remains both icon and pioneer of graphic design and photography. The upcoming show at Puccio Gallery is a rare treat - a glimpse into the highly personal work of a man whose
exceptional commercial designs are often the focus of his innovative and successful career. Though Wolf had lamented in his soft Viennese accent, "In the end there is only one evaluation
of one's work: it is either good or bad or somewhere in between," Puccio Gallery invites you to judge and enjoy this treasure of complex and beautiful paintings for yourself.
