Jackie Blue Detroit Band Raises Awareness of Hypothalamic Hamartoma...

May 19, 2005 -- Austyn Chalifour. This full of life three year old is in need of major brain surgery. Hypothalamic Hamartoma (HH). A big name for a simple condition: A benign tumor is intertwined with Austyn's hypothalamus (brain area that controls breathing and other basic body functions) and his optic nerve.



It's the surgery that's the problem. How do you remove the tumor without killing or blinding Austyn



According to experts at both the Cleveland Clinic and the Hypothalamic Hamartoma Support Organization, without the surgery Austyn faces Gelastic (laughing) seizures, sometimes tonic-clonic and drop seizures, "hypothalamic rage" behavioral problems, and frequently, precocious (early) puberty. Some people with HH are also affected by Pallister-Hall syndrome, an extremely rare genetic disorder.



Carrie Firth, lead singer of Detroit based rock band Jackie Blue, regularly works with children who experience seizures as a regular part of their lives. Firth says "We're bringing together musicians and the community to give Austyn the money so that he can have his needed surgery and we hope that you'll join us for this great show."
