On the Wall: LEGO Creations from Brickworkz
Richmond artist Brian Korte turns a childhood passion into contemporary art
Richmond, Va. June 22, 2006 -- Richmond artist Brian Korte today announced the public display of mosaic art made entirely from LEGO bricks through July at the Creative Change Center (C3)
in Richmond, Va. More than 250 hours of creation and 150,000 LEGO elements comprise the mosaics on display in the downtown loft space.
This began as a challenge to see if I could create a portrait of my friends made entirely from LEGO bricks. Now, about half of my work week involves the design and creation of LEGO art,
said Brian Korte, brick artist and founder of Brickworkz LLC. For me, the artistic expression is in the creation. I look forward to expanding my horizons with this unique medium and see
where it takes me.
The Brickworkz collection includes LEGO portraits and designs as well as custom mosaics on loan from past customers. Each piece goes through a process of digital design before
construction begins. From there, thousands of LEGO parts are acquired and used to assemble the wall-hanging mosaics. Even the frame bordering the mosaic is made with LEGO roof slope
pieces, creating a beveled edge to formalize the piece.
It comes as no surprise to Korte that so many would be interested in LEGO art. Many of C3'ss visitors have approached me working on newly commissioned mosaics, said Korte. It is rare to
meet someone who has not seen or played with LEGOs before, and I love the smiles that come from such a simple memory.
