What to Do While Waiting for Harry Potter 6 New Resource Helps Readers...

June 15, 2005 -- Oh, the agony! The latest Harry Potter and Eragon books won't be out for several more weeks-but the kids are already out of school and you're beginning to hear the dreaded "I'm bored." There are thousands of other young adult fantasy and science fiction books you could recommend to your children-if only you knew which are worth their time and which should never darken your door.

Luckily, with the launch of WandsAndWorlds.com help is only a mouse-click away.

http://www.WandsAndWorlds.com lets parents and children find over 100 quality Young Adult fantasy and science fiction writers and illustrators: from familiar names like L. Frank Baum, Christopher Paolini and J.K. Rowling to lesser-known gems from both larger and smaller publishers-authors such as Margaret Buffie, Nick Ruth, and Cliff McNish, whose new fans will treasure these discoveries through a lifetime of reading.

The site was started by homeschooling mom (and independent publisher) Sheila Ruth and her son David, age 9, out of their own frustration when they tried to find out if books were age-appropriate and also a really good read.

Visitors to the site can search or browse by author, title, illustrator, and subject theme (e.g., witches, butterflies, space travel, alchemy). Each book listing has a brief description, a recommended age range, and a link to easy ordering at Amazon.com. Most also feature a rating and review by either Sheila or David Ruth, and many provide links to author or publisher websites. There's even a list of books that are part of a series, so unwary readers don't get trapped with volume 3 when they haven't read the first two yet.

Sheila Ruth acknowledges that the present site is only a beginning. "We're adding more titles every day-and we welcome submissions of books we haven't yet discovered. Part of why we're doing this is to help some of these quieter, but very powerful, voices find their richly deserved audiences."
