Farrell Fischoff Gallery is pleased to host the first solo exhibition for Santa Fe artist James Koskinas.
Koskinas describes himself as an Expressionist painter: "I do not own my talent. The paintings come from somewhere. All I have to do is hold on to the brush."
The images that he paints are the product of a psychic process which carries whatever is foremost in his subconscious directly to the canvas. Images appear to him, fully formed. As a true
expressionist artist, he never knows what will appear, until he begins to paint.
His current series of paintings, Women of the Mind, are brilliantly executed as post-modern versions of the German Expressionist style, in which Koskinas explores his subconscious
archetypes of woman and femininity.
James Koskinas was born in Terre Haute, Indiana in 1947. Most of his life has been spent in Arizona and California, where he studied art at the California College of Arts & Crafts in
San Francisco. Koskinas has also studied painting with Louis Milyark and Robert Burridge, and sculpture and design with Bob Winston.
He s worked as a boat restorer, chef, and a contractor remodeling homes in the San Francisco Bay area. His art influences include oceanic and African art; Gauguin, Van Gogh, and Francesco
Clemente, the Italian figurative neo-expressionist painter; and the California painter, Nathan Oliveira.
Koskinas now resides in Lamy, New Mexico where he has lived for the past 5 years with his partner, the painter Julie Schumer.
