Social Networking Site Encourages Diversity Breaks Down Racial Barriers

MixYourWorlds.com launches new social networking tools aimed at helping its members create diverse friend groups while helping them realize and change their racial biases.

MixYourWorlds.com (http://www.mixyourworlds.com) pushes social networking boundaries and mindsets by asking its members: "Can racial profiling be fun" With the introduction of new applications designed to assist members in creating diverse friend groups, MixYourWorlds.com hopes to make users aware of and change their racial preconceptions.

As a fully-featured, web 2.0, social networking site, MixYourWorlds.com allows members to communicate and express themselves through instant messaging, fully-designable "worlds," friends list, personal blogs and more. The "racial profiling" comes from tracking the make-up of users' friends on the site and pointing out racial attraction preferences and biases. Harrison hopes that this new take on the current social networking phenomenon will make the site a beacon for those looking to expand their social base beyond what MySpace and Facebook offers.

"This is brand new to the world of social networking," MixYourWorlds.com creator Art Harrison, said. "We're encouraging our members to create diverse friendships and pay attention to their racial biases. By tracking their interactions on the site and informing them of some of their biases and subconscious values we're trying to give them a gentle nudge towards diversity."

MixYourWorlds.com started as MixedRace.com five years ago. The community-based site aimed to bring together all races to promote and celebrate diversity. While the user base of MixedRace.com grew in diversity, it became apparent that people were still forming small friend groups based almost exclusively on people of one race or ethnicity. As a result, MixYourWorlds.com was launched to attract a broad audience while encouraging them to make friends outside their comfort zones.

"Social networking often takes on the same racial lines that people maintain in the real world," Harrison said. "The Internet has always posed such possibilities to expand individual experiences and relationships, yet many people never cross the racial barriers they see in their everyday lives."

MixYourWorlds.com continues to offers users a safe and fun environment to explore and learn about other cultures and worlds, while also learning more about their own culture and race.
