Raleigh, NC August 3, 2006 -- The American Lung Association of North Carolina honored key statewide volunteers on Friday evening, July 28, 2006 at 7 p.m. at the George Watts Hill Alumni
Center on the UNC Chapel Hill campus.
ALANC introduces a new award this year, the Second Century Pioneer Award. The inaugural award will be presented to Beatriz Betty Blanco Morris, MD. Dr. Morris is honored for her outreach
efforts to the Hispanic community. As a bilingual (Spanish) physician, Dr. Morris gives ALANC outreach to a new and important segment of the community. Her commitment to ALANC enables it
to be on of the only non-profit voluntary health organizations in the region that can provide real time information in Spanish. When it comes to an interview in Spanish, the media know to
contact ALANC. Despite her busy clinical schedule, Dr. Morris has been active in ALANC through

cooperative efforts with Univision media,

ALANC information station at Fiesta del Pueblo, the largest celebration the region,
·
built an asthma walk team and walked with her family raising significant dollars for ALANC,
·
regularly supports ALANC events.
Dr. Morris represents the realization of the American dream. She fled Castro and Communist Cuba in 1967 with her parents and a single suitcase. Her older brother and sister were evacuated
in the famous Peter Pan Airlift to America several years prior, and lived with host families for five years until Betty and her parents escaped Cuba.
Volunteer of the Year, recognition of exemplary statewide leadership, will be awarded to Steve Daniels, news anchor of ABC 11 Eyewitness News. Motivated as a parent, Daniels is committed
to clean air. 's8220;I want all our children to have healthy lungs. The only way to preserve lung health is by promoting clean air initiatives. I see far too many children fighting
asthma. I hope our work at ALA helps find a cause and cure for asthma,'s8221; said Daniels.
Daniels joined ABC 11 Eyewitness News in June 1999 as co-anchor of the station'ss 5:30 pm and 11:00 pm newscasts. Prior to joining the Raleigh news team, and traveled the country and the
world interviewing newsmakers and reporting stories for Dateline NBC's8221; a national newsmagazine program. Steve also appeared on the Today show, NBC Nightly News, MSNBC, and CNBC.
Before that Steve was an anchor and Senior Investigative Reporter for WTVJ in Miami, where he was honored with seven Emmys and several other national awards for outstanding investigative
reporting. He lives in Cary with his wife and children.
