Fuel Cell Leader ElectroChem Awarded New Contract from NASA
A major announcement in
fuel cell technology news comes from leading
fuel cell developer ElectroChem, Inc. this month, as NASA has awarded them a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract to continue its progress on Proton Exchange Membrane
fuel cell (PEMFC) power plants.
The contract follows ElectroChem, Inc.'ss extraordinarily successful Phase I accomplishment in which the advanced
fuel cell technology created a unique integrated-flow-field (IFF) design in its H2/O2 PEMFC power plant. The IFF exhibits highly superior passive water management which has led to gravity independence, higher voltage efficiencies and safe operation at high pressures, which promotes higher efficiency. The design will enable passive operation and requires extremely low excess O2 to maintain stable operation.
The
ElectroChem, Inc. Phase II project will produce a 250W IFF stack that will be integrated directly into NASA'ss Advanced energy storage power plan. The enhanced voltage efficiencies and lower excess O2 requirements allowed by the IFF results in a significantly lower PEMFC power plant weight that is ideal for space applications.
The innovative IFF design is a substantial breakthrough in advanced
fuel cell technology that will eventually be able to serve a wide range of NASA'ss needs, including advanced lunar rovers, shuttles and space stations.
This research would allow ElectroChem, Inc. to accelerate the development of ECCell, adds ElectroChem, Inc. president Radha Jalan. ECCell is a high efficiency, highly reliable PEM
fuel cell based energy storage device.
ECCell is a clean source to provide on-demand power for applications such as primary power for homes and backup power for computers and telecommunications devices.
