Its Exactly What You Want In a Spouse Or A Crate Engine
May 20, 2005 -- Would you like gobs of tire-shredding power for your hot rod Would you like it to be as reliable and low-maintenance as the engine in a brand-new vehicle If you answered yes on both counts, you'll love Smeding Performance's Chevy 540 Extreme. This stroked big-block Chevy crate engine proves once again that size does matter, producing a whomping 590 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 645 lb-ft of torque at 4100 rpm. Plus, this engine is not just streetable, it's durable and low-maintenance. It's all the fun you want under the hood, and it's easy to live with.
This Smeding crate engine is not a rebuild. The Chevy 540 Extreme starts out with a brand-new GM 502-cubic-inch 4-bolt-main Gen VI block. The 4.500-inch-bore block is modified to accept a new 4340 forged steel crankshaft with a 4.250-inch stroke and 4340 steel H-beam connecting rods with ARP cap bolts. The rotating assembly is spin balanced to within 1 gram to assure smooth operation and longer engine life.
Smeding specially modifies the Edelbrock Performer RPM rectangular-port cylinder heads to precisely match the flow characteristics of a custom-ground camshaft. The heads feature 2.19 and 1.88 stainless valves, 315cc intake ports and 118cc chambers.
A high-strength forged aluminum piston is used, along with single moly rings, to assure a better combustion seal and virtually no piston scuffing. The stroker engine is assembled with a new double roller timing gear set, Melling oil pump, Fel-Pro gaskets and an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake manifold.
Smeding's Chevy 540 Extreme is perfect for hot rodders who want some real power without sacrificing durability, or doing extra maintenance details. This Smeding crate engine features 9.4:1 compression, so it can run all day long on pump gas with no problems. Plus, to reduce maintenance demands, Smeding uses a hydraulic roller camshaft. There's no valve lash to set, so you can treat this engine just like the one in a brand-new vehicle.
Smeding sells the Chevy 540 Extreme for $8,495. The stroked big-block Chevy engine comes with a standard two-year limited warranty.
