Whether you wear sling backs, mules or platforms (or walk into the studio with your favorite high heels in hand), Backbone and Wingspan will show you innovative ways to strike that challenging balance between a comfortable shoe experience and a fabulous fashion expression. This month, Backbone and Wingspan is offering a free clinic to teach women how to strengthen and release areas that tend to tighten from long hours spent teetering on five-inch heels. The clinic will be held on Saturday, April 25th at 2:00 p.m. at Backbone and Wingspan'ss studio at 115 West 30th Street, Suite 1209. Complimentary wellness therapies and evaluations will also be offered. Reservations are required at 212-647-8878.
Studio director and founder Tim Driscoll who is a foot alignment expert and Cathy Ferrara, a certified Pilates instructor at Backbone and Wingspan, have developed The High Heel Workout, a
30 minute series of exercises that will help any woman survive her highest of high heels. During the free clinic, five Backbone and Wingspan instructors will lead participants through a
variety of exercise and movement methods that will help support the back, prevent injury, and create elasticity in tone-challenged areas. Backbone and Wingspan Physical Therapist /
Feldenkrais's174; Practitioner Karen Donelson will assist attendees with balance point movement to achieve comfort, strength, and grace, and CranioSacral Therapist Gabriel Bobek will
offer complimentary ten minute CranioSacral and foot therapy sessions.
Women who spend the majority of their day literally on their toes are very vulnerable to injuries of all sorts, says Ferrara. We wanted to create a series of exercises that would counter
the physical effects of wearing high heels and help support the back and other areas that are strained whether you are running around in stilettos or kitten heels.
The High Heel Workout uses Pilates-based stretches and strengthening exercises to release muscles that are sore after hours of wearing some of today'ss most perilously fashionable shoes.
A hands-on approach will be used to walk you through the workout combining spinal strengthening, hip stretching and stress-relief exercises while incorporating mind-body imagery that will
have you grounded from your core to your soles in no time.
Director Tim Driscoll founded Backbone and Wingspan in April of 2003. He has developed intricate methodology and written in detail about foot alignment and it'ss effect on the entire
body. (See the weblog pilatesiconoclast ). Currently working on a book about The High Heel Workout, Tim is a published author whose work has appeared in a number of anthologies as well as
fitness publications
