US SAILING Champions Americas Waterway Watch Sailors Unite to Protect American Shores



US SAILING is partnering with the United States Coast Guard's America's Waterway Watch to offer educational materials to more than 5,000 students participating in courses at US SAILING accredited sailing schools across the United States. America's Waterway Watch (http://www.americaswaterwaywatch.org) is a nationwide initiative, similar to the well-known and successful Neighborhood Watch program, that enlists the active participation of those who live, work or play around America's waterfront areas to help keep those areas safe and secure. US SAILING is the national governing body for sailing in the United States and offers the nation's premier sailing education experience.

The educational materials distributed through this partnership contain information regarding safety on the seas, how to be aware of and identify suspicious behavior, and how and to whom such behavior should be reported.

"US SAILING is proud to assist the United States Coast Guard in protecting 95,000 miles of shoreline," says Hart Kelley, Associate Director of Training at US SAILING. "We think every boater has a responsibility to support these security measures."

America's Waterway Watch combines the efforts of the United States Coast Guard and its Reserve and Auxiliary to report suspicious activity to the Coast Guard and law enforcement agencies. "We are always looking for more boaters to actively protect our shoreline," says Lieutenant Jim Rocco of the United States Coast Guard. "We are thrilled with the connection US SAILING has made to increase U.S. citizens' ownership of a neighborhood."
