Miles of waterfront and a temperate Spring climate will enhance the Charleston Harbor Fest, a 3-day celebration of the sea and the city's rich maritime history, from May 16-18. Formerly called the Charleston Maritime Festival, the event has been renamed and updated to reflect an increased scope of attractions and expansion of the festival grounds. Entrance to the grounds is free, but a wristband is required to board and tour some attractions. Great food, live music and the chance to admire classic traditional boats will appeal to all ages. For more information about the festival, log on to charlestonharborfest.org or call (843) 722-1030.
The Charleston Maritime Center is the hub of the event, with activities and attractions stretching in almost every direction. Visiting tall ships will join South Carolina's own The Spirit
of South Carolina, and there will be opportunities to sail, row and peruse a large collection of classic wooden boats. Families will enjoy the authentic pirate camp, the family boat
building program with hands-on experience, and Education Village, with interactive experiences for children. Docked at the passenger terminal, the Guided Missile Frigate, the USS Stephen
W Groves (FFG 29) will be open to the public while servicemen and women provide tours. This large Navy ship is designed to provide local area protection to battle groups, underway
replenishment groups, amphibious forces, military and merchant ships, and to conduct Anti-Submarine Warfare operations.
