Maverick Author Offers World Rights To Latest Fantasy Novel Series On Ebay

May 3, 2005 -- Gambling on what the current buoyant book and character rights market will bear, author R.J. Nimmo is offering global rights to his emerging young adult fantasy novel series, about 12-year-old identical telekinetic twin sisters and their time travelling exploits, in an online auction on Ebay from April 28-May 8.

But for anyone interested in bidding it will come at a price. Nimmo, who is relying on a bullish market where advances for similar successful series such as Michelle Paver's "Wolf Boy" and P.B. Kerr's "Children of the Lamp" recently netted high 6- even 7-figure sums, has set the reserve at a cool 100,000 (US $190,000).

Nimmo isn't worried the high reserve might put off potential bidders. "Offered are lucrative rights for a mainstream, commercially exploitable crossover book series", says Nimmo. "Misjudging what the market will bear means all rights revert back to me in the event of a no-sale, which is why it is merely sound business strategy to place a bullish reserve on what are significant rights in all territories. Any potential buyer that finds the reserve unrealistic has not done his or her homework; properly exploited and promoted these rights would net the buyer a valuable creative property and an ongoing franchise."

Movie and TV serialisation potential.

Eschewing the usual route to selling book, movie and associated rights, Nimmo washed his hands of agents and went it alone.

Nimmo explains: "In conjunction with liaising with a creative rights lawyer, I felt I was better positioned to represent the rights myself. It is a truism that rights are really only worth what a creative property can realise in the market place, and this innovative series requires representation by someone who understands the unique commercial and creative potential. In the wake of successful movie adaptations of such books as Harry Potter and J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy I took the decision that the series needed someone championing the simultaneous rights across all media, and I was best placed to do just that."

Released in February 2005 to critical acclaim, the first novel in the "Tales of the Mustard Twins" series, "The Ancient Egyptian Ennead", follows the exploits of telekinetic identical twins, Emily and Nelly Mustard, who when scolded simply retreat into a "make believe" ancient land ruled by kings and pharoahs that turns out not to be so make believe after all. Here, their tall stories and inventive excuses are listened to by awed ancient populations, assuming the girls to be goddesses. For the almost-teenage twins it is all just great fun; popular myths and legends are created and shaped due to the girls' seemingly endless capacity for telling outlandish tales. However, unbeknownst to the twins, due to their growing powers of telekinesis they are toying with the development of all human history.

Auction ends on May 8.
