The event will highlight a series of twelve dynamic photographs by Houston-based artist, Cara Barer, which showcase Barer's sculptive approach to the book. Shot on a black background, found books take on color and shape, elegantly transposed by the artist's hands into recognizable forms. The dirtied, warped, and sometimes dyed leaves of text may become the wings of a butterfly, the gills of a mushroom, or the intricately symmetrical crystals of a newly formed snowflake.
An online version of the exhibit will be available at www.wlbooks.com.
Cara Barer studied Art and Photography at the Glassell School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and the Art Institute of Houston. Her work has appeared in shows from New York to California, and throughout the state of Texas. This will be the first exhibition of her photography in the Pacific Northwest.
The exhibit runs from September 4th through October 31st. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, September 4th, from 6-8pm and is open to the public.
