The prestigious "Inspirational Readers Choice" awards were held last week in Reno Nevada and local author Janice Thompson was named among the top inspirational authors of the year for her
book HURRICANE (about the Galveston hurricane of 1900).
Thompson, who writes for the inspirational market, couldn't be happier.
"I knew that Texans would relate to the story," she explains. "But this is a national contest (hosted by the RWA - Romance Writers of America) and judged by readers from all over the
country." HURRICANE was a finalist in the "Short Historical" category.
Thompson has been traveling the Texas Gulf Coast area for months, speaking to civic groups, churches and writing groups about the Galveston hurricane of 1900. When the book released last
October, it came on the heels of four catastrophic storms. Thompson was awed by the timing. "I knew we were set to have a heavy season," she explains. "But I had no way of knowing just
how heavy."
And now that the 2005 season is well underway, Thompson speaks of hurricanes with a degree of reverence in her voice. "We have no control over these mighty storms," she says. "Just like
we have no control over many of the emotional or physical storms we go through in our lives. Storms either weaken us or make us stronger."
And that's her message as she speaks to Houston's Lions Clubs, historical groups and churches. There is hope - even in the midst of hurricane season. Even in the middle of whatever storms
you might be facing personally. There is hope.
