New Publishing House in North Jersey Specializes in Helping FirstTime...

Has anyone ever said you should write a book Now it's8217;s easier than ever for authors to get their books on their shelves. Long Dash Publishing, which recently opened in Hackensack, makes it easier, quicker and cheaper to get published, thanks to cutting-edge print-on-demand technology.

's8220;We love working with other writers, especially first-time authors,'s8221; said Tim Harper, a journalist, author, and publishing consultant who founded Long Dash Publishing with partner James Potter. 's8220;We's8217;re providing a small, personalized alternative to the big print-on-demand houses such as iUniverse, Xlibris, AuthorHouse and BookSurge. We's8217;ll talk to you, we's8217;ll listen to you and we's8217;ll make your books one at a time, partly by hand.'s8221;

Authors submit manuscripts via e-mail or on a disk, and then Long Dash prints and binds the book on the spot: a perfect-bound trade paperback with a color cover. 's8220;Typical printing time is anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the book,'s8221; James Potter said. 's8220;That's8217;s much faster than the several months for the typical publisher.'s8221;

Authors who are publishing through Long Dash include novelists, family historians, journal-keepers and memoirists, poets, bloggers, professors who want their lessons in a single volume, teachers who compile their students's8217; work, chefs who collect their recipes, and professionals who offer how-to and self-improvement advice. Authors who print with Long Dash retain 100 percent of their rights, and often use their Long Dash editions to show agents and editors in hopes of landing a traditional publishing contract.

Standard printing costs begin at $175 for the first 10 copies (250 pages or less) and decrease afterward: $125 for the next 10 copies, and $85 for every 10 copies thereafter. Prices vary with paper, size or cover upgrades. In contrast, the big POD companies charge much more; iUniverse's8217;s basic package is $499 for five 's8220;free's8221; books.

Long Dash offers author services, including formatting, editing, and cover design. ISBN and copyright registration are available. In addition, Long Dash books can be purchased through its Web site, www.longdash.com. Authors receive a 25 percent royalty.
