New Web Site Aims to Increase Book Sales

Author and book reviewer Debra Hamel has created a new web site, www.buyafriendabook.com that encourages visitors to surprise their friends with the gift of books during four annual "Buy a Friend a Book Weeks"--the first weeks of every January, April, July, and October.

For each Buy a Friend a Book Week Hamel will invite a guest reviewer to recommend three books to her site's visitors. The guest reviewer for the first Buy a Friend a Book Week (July 1st-7th) is Damian McNicholl, the author of A Son Called Gabriel (CDS Books, 2004). Hamel also includes her own brief reviews on the site, selecting her recommendations from among the books she's reviewed at www.book-blog.com her book review web site.

Participants in Buy a Friend a Book Week are invited to publicize their involvement by posting images available at buyafriendabook.com on their own sites. Participants can also print out a description of Buy a Friend a Book Week to include in their gift books.

Hamel hopes the idea behind buyafriendabook.com will capture the public's imagination and help promote reading and increase book sales.

The books recommended by Hamel and guest reviewer Damian McNicholl for the first Buy a Friend a Book Week range from historical fiction to memoir to comedy and are likely to appeal to a wide book-buying audience. McNicholl has recommended "The Bitch Posse", by Martha O'Connor, "Three Junes", by Julia Glass, and "A Month of Sundays", by Julie Mars. Hamel recommends "The Last Duel", by Eric Jager, "Beneath a Marble Sky", by John Shors, and Gideon Defoe's "The Pirates! In an Adventure With Scientists".
