Professor Follows in Chaucers Footsteps Down the Camino Road

"Walking the Camino in an Age of Anxiety: The Search for the Medieval Pilgrim" by educator John H. Pratt examines the history and the folklore behind the Camino, a pilgrimage road that carried medieval pilgrims out of France and across Northern Spain to the city of Santiago. This is an exhilaratingly personal journey that is as entertaining as it is educational.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of modern day pilgrims still travel the Camino, some on bicycle, but most on foot. Author John H. Pratt and his wife walked the route and in this stunning memoir, discovered more than they bargained for. Pratt, the author of the previous book "Chaucer and War," wanted to immerse himself in the life of the medieval pilgrim, but instead, in the shadow of 9/11, he found that modern life kept getting in the way.

Written in warm graceful prose, "Walking the Camino in an Age of Anxiety: The Search for the Medieval Pilgrim" is packed with fascinating details about the Middle Ages, the crusades, and modern day politics. But more importantly, the book describes how the journey transformed the author in ways he never expected. Pratt learns that walking takes its toll on the body. He discovers incredible friendships with other pilgrims and he realizes that the journey is often more important than the destination. Wise and inspirational, this is a book sure to be a treasured edition to any home or school library.
