Celebrate May Days 2005 in Southbridge MA

May 4, 2005 -- Business owners and merchants in Southbridge, the Eye of the Commonwealth, have a vision for their town: to make Southbridge a destination stop for people traveling through Central Massachusetts.

Like its neighboring town of Sturbridge, Southbridge is steeped in history. Many of the buildings that line Main Street, also known as Centre Village, are recorded on the National Register. The town's heritage is rich in contributions to our way of life, from the manufacture of optical products and groundbreaking fiber optics technology to world re-nown cutlery and tool and die making.

This is why the business people of Southbridge have formed the Southbridge Merchants and Businesses collective. Their goal is to have the community focus more attention on and interest in their historic town. Much has been done to improve the physical look of Main Street, from wider roads and brilliant streetlights to the restoration and preservation of its many historic buildings.

Several merchants and business owners feel very strongly about a continued interest and involvement with the community. And long time business establishments such as Pizza Chef, Tot to Teen, Gordon Music, and the Video Dimensions are eager to see empty stores turn into thriving and exciting new businesses. "We want the people of Southbridge to realize how much their hometown has to offer. We want Main Street to be alive with pedestrian traffic, add a little bustle," said Valerie Pontbriand, shopkeeper of Four Eyes Joke Shop, one of the 'new kids' on the block.

"May Days 2005, on May 6 and 7, is our first little effort to bring positive life to the heart of our community," Pontbriand added.

"Merchants, businesses, and community groups will come together to fill the downtown area with sidewalk sales, magicians, music, and more. You can ride the bucket of Tower #1 at the Southbridge Fire Department, pick up a free newspaper from the Southbridge Evening News, the voice of Southbridge, and enjoy a cup of java that will knock your socks off from Sturbridge Coffee Roasters on Hamilton Street."

Not sure what all Southbridge has to offer Visit the new Southbridge Information Booth located in front of Tradewinds on Main Street. Stroll the downtown on May 6 and 7 and see for yourself what Southbridge has to offer.

To discover which businesses are behind these efforts "keep your eye out for the Eyeball," said Pontbriand. Members of the Southbridge Merchants and Businesses collective proudly display the "Eyeball" logo at their establishments. "The symbol says it all: we've got our eye on the community and we want the community to see its town for all it is worth," said Pontbriand. And speaking of eyes, keep your eyes out, too, for your own Eyeball emblem. "They will be found in the Southbridge Evening News so local townsfolk can proudly show support for Southbridge."
