The World is ComingWhat Impression will Detroiters Make

May 4, 2005 -- This is a year which will no doubt prove to be instrumental in the future of Detroit. With Major League Baseball's All-Star game just weeks away and the Super Bowl arriving in less than 300 days, Detroiters are aware that the eyes of the world are upon thembut are we ready

The Super Bowl Host Committee is comprised of some of the area's most capable and charismatic leaders. And they're working hard to make sure that details such as infrastructure, security, and transportation are adequate for the big events to come. But the fact is, the vast majority of the throng of visitors who visit our area in the coming months will never have an opportunity to meet these polished ambassadors. Instead, visitors will interact with waiters and waitresses, cab and limo drivers, hotel workers, shopkeepers, and countless other unofficial diplomats. This is where the rubber hits the roadin the streets, in the hallways of hotels, and in lines at the airport. And some wonder how Detroit will fare in the categories of friendliness and hospitality.

Which is why businesses who are interested in being a part of Detroit's renaissance are polishing up their P's and Q's. And many are calling on local consultant Cyndee Harrison and her company, Courtesy Coaching.

Since 1999, Harrison, along with a handful of fellow instructors have been offering manners and etiquette training throughout Southeastern Michigan. Originally, they targeted teens and families. "In the beginning, we focused our efforts on youth because I feel that Character Education is one of the most noble causes in public education today" she states. As an experienced teacher currently working for Detroit Public Schools, she knew all too well the cost of poor conduct in the classroom.

For the past year, however, her group has been hard at work developing adult training which ranges from Point-of-Contact staff (such as wait staff and cab drivers) to executives and business professionals. "It's all about making these rules of etiquette and protocol real for the audience where they live, work, and play" Harrison says. "It is essential that Detroiters do all that they can to gain confidence and composure when the eyes of the world are upon them. Rather than fish forks and demitasse service, today's busy local executive needs to know how to properly introduce themselves and network-they need to be comfortable taking an out-of-town guest or a potential client to lunch. And the front-line service workers should also feel at ease handling busier-than-normal crowds with confidence and poise. It's not only good for tips, it's good for our city and for the overall impression that we'll collectively make."

From volunteers to valets, cab drivers to cocktail waitresses, Harrison and the trainers of Courtesy Coaching stand ready to help Detroit put our best foot forwardand make a lasting impression when the world comes to visit!
