A decade ago, people search and background check web sites sprang up like mushrooms in a damp field. They offered inexpensive services at lower rates than private investigators.

But many users report poor results from online databases . Now, private investigators report a surge of interest in people finding -- the old fashioned way. Some of TheSearchGods projects require more than a database, and develop into complex background checks spanning several decades. The firm once located two German nationals who had worked in the US years ago, had married and changed last names. More recently, the firm found dozens of former associates of a key witness who testified in a case where a man was wrongfully convicted.
