Scared of Taking the PlungeDont let Your Knowledge Back You into a Corner
May 26, 2005 -- Most of us make fun of the idea that ignorance is bliss and pride ourselves in not being one of the ignorant. However, life coach Dan Miller sees a reverse phenomenon. The paradox of knowledge is this: the more we know, the more we realize what we don't know. As he explains in his book, "48 Days to the Work You Love," a person who begins studying butterflies discovers the thousands of species that exist. A student continues the pursuit of more and more degrees, 'getting ready' for that first job. The person looking for a job spends six months researching companies and job search strategies. The frustrated employee who wants his/her own business spends ten years carefully planning every possible outcome.
Miller sees seasoned professionals (attorneys, physicians, dentists, engineers, pastors) who are paralyzed by the very education and knowledge they have struggled to get. Their ability to see new opportunities is restricted rather than enlarged. Sometimes ignorance is bliss in allowing us to see more options as opposed to seeing only narrow choices.
When do you have enough knowledge to start something new When you decide to take action! The baby eagle learns how to fly as he is heading straight toward the rocks below, not while sitting on the edge of the nest. The business owner learns while hiring, buying, and making mistakes more than while sitting in a classroom. The unemployed person approaches success while knocking on doors, making phone calls, and getting repeated rejections, not while scanning the Internet and reading textbooks.
Don't get trapped in the paradox of gathering more and more knowledge. It may cripple you! Create a time table and be prepared to act - move on.
