Gwen Stefani Escapes On Stage Through Curtains Created By Sew What...

When the producers of Gwen Stefani'ss new Sweet Escape tour approached Sew What Inc. for new masking drapes, they wanted something more than the usual Commando Cloth fabric (http://www.sewwhatinc.com/events_commando.php). They wanted drapes that could be used tour after tour, while still looking great and retaining the required flame retardancy properties.

Most tour producers think in terms of just the one tour, said Sew What president Megan Duckett. What I loved about this assignment was the forward-thinking of the producers. They were concerned about longevity and continued flame retardancy, which actually makes tremendous sense.

The Sew What team selected their 22 oz. Encore Velour (http://www.sewwhatinc.com/vel_22encore.php) as the fabric of choice to drape the high-energy show, which kicked off at the Coors Amphitheater in Chula Vista, CA on April 22. According to the Sew What website, IFR Encore Velour is a newly introduced stage curtain fabric which combines the rich look of velour with inherent flame resistance. The higher cost of this fabric is offset by fact that it does not need to be re-treated for flame retardancy, therefore making it ideal for heavy-duty and repeated use.

Included onstage are a 40's x 60's backdrop (http://www.sewwhatinc.com/stage_backdrops.php), mid-stage and riser masking drapes, and a huge Kabuki drop curtain with black and white stripes echoing the show'ss prison escape theme.

When the Sweet Escape tour travels abroad, they will bring along a different set of drapes now being created by Sew What. Whereas the current show utilizes walls incorporating dazzling LED displays, the international set will need to be more compact and travel lighter. This requires bringing the bling to the curtains instead.

The international drapes are one of the most exciting projects we'sve had. They have to carry the visual weight of the show, added Ms. Duckett. These new drapes are based on Gwen'ss gold G logo, and will combine traditional velour with digital printing along with amazing appliqués including giant acrylic jewels. They'sre going to be a work of art! But then, this is just the kind of thing we specialize in.

Sew What Inc., located in Rancho Dominguez, CA, is well-known for its dramatic theatrical drapes and fabrics used in major rock concerts, top fashion shows and other artistic staged venues. In 2006, the company received numerous awards for innovation, including the Dell/NFIB Small Business Excellence Award as well as PC Magazine'ss SMB 20 Award for technological innovation for small and medium-sized businesses.
