String theory is a relatively new and controversial branch of theoretical physics that attempts to explain our universe by unifying the realm of the very large, described by Einstein's8217;s theory of general relativity, with the realm of the very small, as defined by quantum theory.

In its basic formulation, it posits the string, a tiny open or closed loop that vibrates in six extra compactified spatial dimensions, as the fundamental constituent of the universe.

The latest versions of string theory suggest yet more cosmological oddities, including:

* new fundamental objects called membranes or 's8216;branes's8217; that exist within an enveloping meta-verse or 's8216;bulk's8217;

* colliding 's8216;braneworlds's8217; that turn the Big Bang into a 's8216;Big Splat's8217;

* tears in the fabric of space and time that form 's8216;wormholes's8217; and that might actually lead to travel back and forth through time

* an infinite 's8216;landscape's8217; that contains a multitude of universes, each with differing fundamental physical laws

Lisa Randall of Harvard University has said of string theory, 's8216;I's8217;m afraid such ideas might sound more like the province of novelists and lunatics than the focus of real scientific inquiry.'s8217;

Scriblerus Press's8217;s upcoming anthology aims to provide a place of dialogue between this stranger-than-fiction yet, nonetheless, real scientific inquiry and the fertile imaginations of novelists and lunatics alike.

Writers are invited to submit either a poem, a short story, or an essay. A variety of styles and genres is encouraged. Fiction may be, but is by no means limited to, science-fiction. In addition to their overall literary merit, works will be judged on the basis of the originality with which they engage string theory.

Poems should be no more than forty lines.

Short stories, no more than 7000 words.

Essays, no more than 5000 words.

We strongly prefer that you submit works for consideration electronically's8212;as a Word, RTF, or PDF attachment in an email addressed to the editor. The body of the email should include a one or two sentence synopsis of the work, along with a brief biography of the author.

You may also submit work with cover letter via snail mail to the following address:

Hard copies of short stories and essays should be double-spaced with one inch margins all around on 8.5's8221; x 11's8221; white paper's8212;with the name of the author and page number on each page. Pages should be joined only by paper-clip.

The work should not have been previously published in the United States.

We will make every effort to respond within one month of submission.

Works should be submitted by May 31, 2007.

An honorarium of US $20 will be offered for each work along with two copies of the anthology upon publication.
