Hiking five hundred miles across northern Spain supplies boomers and others with ample opportunity for adventure and discovery. An in-depth experience awaits those who travel the ancient
pilgrimage trail known as the Camino de Santiago; those who brave the 1200-year-old trail on foot, bike, or horseback have time to really discover the riches of Spain: the hearty food and
good wines, the welcoming hosts, the beautiful and varied countryside, the historic cities, and the unique culture. At the end of the journey is the beautiful World Heritage City of
Santiago de Compostela where pilgrims gather at the cathedral to visit the remains of St. James, one of Jesus'ss twelve apostles.
Traveling across Spain on the Camino de Santiago (aka St. James Way) has been undertaken by millions of people over the last 1,200 years, so there'ss no doubt it can be done, but
nevertheless, it presents real challenges and offers genuine rewards to its travelers. Susan Alcorn provides travelers with an intimate view into the modern day pilgrimage in her new
book, Camino Chronicle: Walking to Santiago (ISBN 0-936034-03-3, Shepherd Canyon Books, $14.95, June 2006).
Susan and her husband Ralph were experienced backpackers when they set out for Spain, but getting ready for a several hundred mile hike, and being out of the country for six weeks, was a
new experience. We had just completed the last section of the Sierra'ss John Muir Trail, but hiking in Spain was quite different. Try long-distance hiking where you aren'st quite sure
where you'sll stay at the end of the day, aren'st sure if you'sll recognize the food items on the menu, and, you don'st speak the language. It was particularly stressful when 9-11
occurred. We were sitting in a restaurant, with the TV blaring, when the news came on. We speak very little Spanish, so we had a hard time figuring out what was going on. Luckily, the
local library had Internet access and we were able to communicate with friends and family back home.
Camino Chronicle: Walking to Santiago not only takes readers along on the couple'ss hike across Spain, but also introduces readers to the mythology and the historical and cultural
insights that will help them understand why it is that the Camino de Santiago has transformed the lives of million who'sve traveled it. This is adventure of the first order.
