Ease the Pain of the May 14th Postal Rate Increase

The U.S. Postal Service will be increasing its rates effective today, May 14th. It will also introduce dimensional weighting and simplified International mailing options. What this amounts to is a large increase in the cost of mailing letters and parcels.

One way for the parcel shipper to subsidize these new rates is to insure their packages with a 3rd party shipping insurer. The Postal Service offers coverage but it is at a substantial premium and the claims process can be cumbersome. One such option is DSI Insurance. DSI is a private shipping insurance provider that offers coverage up to 90% off of the carrier insurance rates with rapid, paperless claims handling. They have been insuring packages sent via all the major shipping carriers for over 20 years.

Shipping with the Postal Service and insuring with DSI is straightforward; the coverage option is built into many of the electronic shipping software systems available. Coverage is also available for the infrequent shippers who use stamps or take their parcels to the Post Office to mail.

The rate increase may cause costs to double in some cases, so make sure to look for alternatives to save money on your shipping charges.
