Fuel Duty Rise Kicks in Today as UK Petrol Prices Soar

The duty will take the cost of filling the average Briton'ss tank to 's163;62, an increase of over 25% since 2007.

Surging oil prices and rising demand are also forcing petrol prices up with last week'ss average of 105.02p per litre the highest level since mid-October 2008.

In the last twelve months, Swinton, the UK'ss leading high street motor insurance retailer has seen a 22% increase in the number of car insurance (http://www.swinton.co.uk) quotes for more fuel efficient smaller-engined vehicles.

Insurer development manager at Swinton, Steve Chelton, said: Motorists have seen petrol prices escalate since the start of 2009 and although diesel costs have risen at a slower rate, prices for both will jump today due to the latest duty hike.

Cash strapped Brits are choosing to cut their outgoings and Swinton has seen a significant increase in the number of insurance quotes for smaller engined vehicles which are cheaper to insure, tax and refuel.
